I live in the Broadland village of Upton, just off the marshes that lead to the River Bure. It is a paradise for birds: geese in their thousands in the autumn and winter, flocks of crows and rooks gathering for their roost in the early evening and garden birds all year round. My studio is a wooden building in the garden and I am frequently distracted by the cries of Marsh Harriers and Buzzards. Since retiring from teaching I have gone back to producing lino-prints. I use the reduction method in which the block is progressively cut away following each printing of colours light to dark. It's a nerve-wracking process as you can never go back. Recently, I have worked on a series of prints placing birds in iconic sites in Norwich such as the Cathedral and Pull's Ferry. I hope that the prints convey the joy I feel being surrounded by birds. Maybe they also speak of how precious our natural environment is but also how fragile.
